Templated self-assembly in three dimensions using magnetic levitation†

چکیده
Although self-assembly (SA) in two dimensions (2D) is highly developed (especially using surfaces as a templates), SA in three dimensions (3D) has been more difficult. This paper describes a strategy for SA in 3D of diamagnetic plastic objects (mmto cm-sized in this work, but in principle in sizes from 10 mm to m) supported in a paramagnetic fluid by a non-uniform magnetic field. The magnetic field and its gradient levitate the objects, template their self-assembly, and influence the shape of the assembled cluster. The structure of the 3D assembling objects can be further directed using hard mechanical templates—either the walls of the container or co-levitating components—which coincide spatially with the soft template of the magnetic field gradient. Mechanical agitation anneals the levitating clusters; the addition of photocurable adhesive, followed by UV illumination, can permanently fuse components together.

Using magnetic levitation for three dimensional self-assembly.
The development of practical strategies for the assembly of objects into 3D arrays is an unsolved problem. This paper describes the use of magnetic levitation (MagLev) to guide the self-assembly of millimeterto centimeter-scale dia magnetic objects, which we call “components”, each programmed by shape and distribution of density, into 3D assemblies and structures in a paramagnetic fl uid medium...

In this paper a new method is proposed for determining PID controller parameters in order to decrease losses in levitation system of magnetic trains. It is assumed that this system is a hybrid system and it consists of electric and permanent magnet. For optimization of losses initially AC losses of magnetic levitation system are calculated. Linear model of levitation system as well as modeling ...

Patterning multiple cell types is a critical step for engineering functional tissues, but few methods provide three-dimensional positioning at the cellular length scale. Here, we present a "bottom-up" approach for fabricating multicellular tissue constructs that utilizes DNA-templated assembly of 3D cell-laden hydrogel microtissues. A flow focusing-generated emulsion of photopolymerizable prepo...

In this work, yolk-shell structured magnetic hollow mesoporous silica (MHMS) nanospheres with controllable magnetic responsibility, high specific surface area, a huge cavity and ink-bottle type mesopores were successfully synthesized in one-step by an electrostatic self-assembly templated approach. The obtained MHMS nanospheres exhibited low cytotoxicity, excellent biocompatibility and potentia...
